Glass Beaded Garlands

Fancy Beads - Round & Oval Beads

Some of the beads shown here would also be at home on the Glass-Gablonz page, but there I have listed the composed ornaments, figures and various other models. Here are garlands and loose examples of beads.
Often garlands broke and were restrung and combined with other beads. Here some still have the original cord and cardboard end-stops, secured with a piece of wire in a loop. Some of these cardboard end stops are shown below.
Garlands with smaller beads sometimes have bells or flowers added. Of course, they could have been added later.
Free blown are those without a seam, but of course I could be wrong; size can vary. Size given is not the length of the string, but of the bead, not counting the pikes.
Pictures in most cases only show part of the garland. Some are several meters long.
Ornaments made of beads are shown under the Glass-Gablonz page.

Samples of the way garlands were finished at the end. It is thought that the stars with foil are Japanese, while the round cardboard are German and earlier. I am not sure that the rectangular silver foil covered one is original.

Often the beaded garlands are also finished with a more or less rectangular piece of cardboard. I think these were selfmade, either when the garlands were restrung, or composed with beads that were purchased separately.

Fancy Beads

Below a combination of beads, different colors and shapes: round, colored, golden or gilt, beads with cross, cubes, faceted, flowers, ribbed even a snail. In the book "Glasperlen Christbaumschmuck/Glass Bead Christmas Tree Ornaments" by Waltraud Neuwirth, some of them are described as being pre-1914 (page 99 and 164), while on page 64 and 65 attributed to the 1920s of the W. Klaar company, Gablonz., and page 68.

Round and Oval Beads

Garlands of round and oval beads were made in all sizes, some mold blown and others free blown, which are thought to be older. These old ones were sometimes wrapped with crinkly wire, making them less vulnerable.
