Lights: Boxed Sets Various

First some different export labels that are found on many, but not on all of these boxes.
"JIS" stands for "Japanese Industrial Standard".
What "J.B.R.C." stands for, relevant to the Japanese label and period, I have not been able to find out.
"?E.L.R.C." on the round stamps.

The following boxes I found now and then and at one time it occurred to me that the same design for the box had apparently been used over a long period, judging by the quality of the cardboard and the colors of the printing.
Below I have tried to picture them, what I think to be the oldest first and bought as is. There is no indication of a make.

ER1
Box: 9 x 23 cm.
This is a small box with electric cord for 10 bulbs with sockets of green bakelite. There are 11 bulbs, so one is reserve. I bought the cord with the box, so I presume they are contemporary. A label on the side of the cover reads “export standard”.
ER2
Box: 15 x 26 cm.
This is a larger box with the electric cord attached to one half of the plastic light covers. One half unscrews for replacing the light bulb. I have been told they date from the 1950s.
ER3
Box: 32 x 20 cm. Larger box for 18 lights. The electric cord is covered with cloth and the 16 sockets are green bakelite. So there would be room for 2 reserve lamps. I am not sure if the cord and the lamps are contemporary with the box, but I am showing them here as I bought them.

ER4
Box: 21 x 21cm.
This box I think is fun. It is a set of 24 midget lights, different colors in transparent plastic holders, with a white plastic cord. I think the presentation is very successful.

ER5
Box: 25 x 9 cm.
This is a box with an electric cord for 9 lamps with dark green bakelite sockets. The box holds 9 light bulbs, so there is no room for a reserve. On the side of the lid is a white label, reading “S-F 120V”. See also the next box.
ER6
Box: 25 x 15cm.
This box contains an electric cord for 18 light bulbs with green bakelite sockets. There is room for two reserve lamps. On the side of the cover is a white label, reading “L - O 220V”.
ER7 Box: 32,5 x 27,5 cm. This box contains an electric cord with 16 bubble lights with green plastic sockets. There is room for two reserve lights. In one of the boxes I found the yellow label. "II/71" maybe November 1971 ??? A similar box is also shown in pages "Boxed Bubble Lights" under "Bubble 3"

ER8
Box: 9 x 25 cm.
I think the cover design of this box is a look-a-like of the former ones; text on the box is "X'MAS DECORATION LAMPS", while on the inside flap it reads "TREASURE ISLAND".

It has an 8-socket plastic electric cord with green sockets. There is room for 9 bulbs, so one reserve.

At the side is the red/white label "EXPORT STANDARD" and stamped with a small (diam. approx. 1,3cm - inches 0,51) round, blue inked stamp. I can only decipher 8.11.

ER9
Box: 11 x 38,5 cm.

The cover design of this box is the same as the former one, but text "TREASURE ISLANDS" is on the lid as well as on the inside flap.

It has an 10-socket green fabric covered electric cord with green sockets. There are 11 figural bulbs, all clear glass and marked 15VJAPAN, room for one reserve; I am not sure they belong to the box.

At the side is the red/white label "EXPORT STANDARD" and stamped with a small (diam. approx. 1,3cm - inches 0,51) round, blue inked stamp. I can only decipher "8...24" could mean 1924?

ER10
Box: 21 x 21 cm.

Box with 20 midget lights; green plastic cord and green bakelite plug. No mention of manufacturer or origin. On the base of the box is blue stamped "220V" and "No. 2756"

The following boxes are various makes, sometimes a production firm is mentioned, but very often the boxes are just marked "Christmas Lamps" or some such indication.

There are sometimes a few variations of each in this collection, or just only one.

Various 1
Box: 13 x 13 cm.
We think this is a string of home made Christmas lights just before or during WW2:
- electric cord is made of two different electric wires
- papier maché candle shaped holders
- bulb, 27 volts, holder and candle clip are held together by a rubber band; this is original because there are still some of the original rubber bands intact and the electric wire has been tied inside the rubber band, which cannot be done with the replacement rubber bands.
Various2
Box: 28 x 21,7 cm.
SIGTAY - Gay, Enchanting, Fairy-Lights.
Green plastic electrical cord with 16 green mottled sockets. There is a special compartment for two reserve bulbs.
The text “14V3W SIGTAY” is impressed in the lamp, while in another, possibly older box, the text is stamped on, and the “W” is omitted.
On the side of the lid, in white reserves, is stamped respectively “220-240V” and “16 + 2 L”.

On one side of the lid in a white reserve is stamped “……2/ M-F/130V”.
Various4
Box: 19 x 9 cm. The same as the previous box, but smaller, and probably newer.

Box: 12 x 16,5 cm
These lights were found in this box and the people we bough it from said they belonged together, but I have my doubts. They remind me of "Globe Lights".
Comments are welcome.
The electrical cord is cloth covered, looks like silk, two-colored, with 8 brown, multicolored mottled, bakelite sockets.
The bulbs are 14V, indicated on the aluminium base. One is a replacement with “14V30A JAPAN” indicated on the copper base.
Various24
Box: 24,5 x 18,5 cm. Lid fixed to the box.

Box: 29 x 16 cm.
Well known box “Christmas Lights by NOMA”. This box is in very poor condition and I bought it many years ago in Belgium, when internet was not popular yet.
Blue and red electrical cord with 7 black ribbed bakelite sockets and red berries. I presume the original light bulbs, but there are no specifications on them.

Various 28
Box: 390,5 x 21,5 cm.
“WARTBURG=HASAG” “PERMANENT CHRISTBAUM-GARNITUR”
Inside the lid of the box a white and a green label; also a separate light green label and, stuck on the flap covering the storage compartment of the string, another label, all with directions for use and information. On the side of the lid is another white label, marked "Nr. 49 Wartburg-Hasag-Permanent-Christbaum-Garnitur D.R.G.M. 110/120 Volt VDE".
Bulbs marked "8V ʘ 2424".
The string is green, cloth covered with a plug with two removable pins and 16 green bakelite sockets with candle shaped bulbs. Attached to the sockets are green metal removable clips.
Besides a spare candle shaped bulb, marked "8V ʘ 3124", there was also another bulb enclosed. In an ad this was described as "dennenlucht brander" ( pine air burner).

Various 29
Box: 27,5 x 27,5 cm.
“HAPPY CHRISTMAS LIGHT SET”. On the base of the box is stamped “VSB-16A 220V”.
White plastic electrical cord with 16 white plastic sockets. What I believe to be the original bulbs are round, clear and marked, as far as I can make out “FIVEBATS 20V 015A”. They are covered by white prickly covered wires forming a ball and of which a thinner version is wound around the electrical cord.

Various 30
Box: 26 x 10,5 cm. Found in France.
Besides “Guirlandes MAZDA” printed on all sides of the box, no other text.
Green plastic electrical cord with 9 green bakelite sockets, each with a red wooden bead. Room for one reserve bulb. What presumably is the original plug is marked “Bte S.G.C.G. 5 AMP.”.

Mazda replacement lights with 10 lamps 5W 14V. “MADE IN FRANCE”. These were together with the box and are the same model.

Various 31
Snow White and Seven Dwarfs set.
Box: 32 x 11,5 cm.
“Christmas Lamps” is printed on the lid and on both long sides “DECORATION LAMP SET”; on one small side is a silver label with green printing “COPYRIGHT WALT DISNEY PRODUCTION Vente Réservée” and in a white reserve stamped “MF-SW 110V Nr.????” (Medium Fancy-Snow White?) and on the other side the red/white label “EXPORT STANDARD”.
Green plastic electrical cord with 8 green Bakelite sockets.
This is the second box I have seen with the same copyright Walt Disney label, and the third box with the “MF-SW” stamped in the white reserve; three different graphics.

Various 31b
Snow White and Seven Dwarfs set.
Box 31,5 x 19 cm.
Same text as the above box, but the graphics are slightly different, e.g. Santa is much closer to the cut-out tree, possibly from blowing up for the larger box. The stamp in the panel on the side is very distinct "MF-SW 220V N0. 8.000". It also has the Walt Disney label, but the export label is missing; I presume it fell off.
Green plastic cord with 16 bakelite sockets.
This is now the 4th Snow White box with the "MF-SW" stamp I have seen.
On the inside of the lid is the standard stamped warning text: “Avant d’allumer, visser à fond toutes les lampes. Alvorens aan te steken, alle lampjes tot einde toe aanvijzen” (screw down the bulbs before lighting).

Various 32
Box: 21 x 9 cm.
“X’mas decoration Star Lamps Bulbs set C-6” is printed on the lid and parts of the text is repeated on the sides.
Green plastic electrical cord with 9 green bakelite sockets. The cord came with the box, together with three figural lights, with engraved on the base “16V Japan”. I have completed the box with more small size figural lights, all engraved “16V Japan”. Room for one reserve bulb.
On one side of the box is a white label with printed text “No. 16351 130V”; on the base of the box the red/white “Export Standard” label; on the inside of the lid is blue ink stamped “Avant d’allumer, visser à fond toutes les lampes – Alvorens aan te steken, alle lampjes tot einde toe aanvijzen”.

Various 32.1
Box: 28,5 x 21 cm.
The same graphic as the previous one, but a larger box. Text on the lid “X’mas decoration Star lamps Bulbs set  Medium Fancy”, indicating the "fancy" figural bulbs, while on the previous box is indicated “C-6”, indicating the cone shaped bulbs. Part of the text is repeated on the sides.
Green plastic cord with 16 Bakelite sockets, leaving room for two reserve bulbs. The cord and most of the lamps came with the box.
Engraved either 15V or 15VJapan.
On one side of the box is small white label with printed text “No. 6150   220V”; on the base of the box the red/white “Export Standard” label; on the inside of the lid is blue ink stamped “Avant d’allumer, visser à fond toutes les lampes – Alvorens aan te steken, alle lampjes tot einde toe aanvijzen”.

Various 33
Box: 50 x 26cm. Lid separate.
Large box with 18 large (total height each is 8cm) figural Japanese balloons bulbs. Bulb bases seem to have a silvery coating. They are all engraved “16V”.
Light green cloth covered cord with 16 bakelite sockets, each with green metal clip.
On the base of the box is part of a stamp: and I think this would date the box 1936.
No other labels or markings remain, but the short side flaps of the lid were missing.
A peculiarity of this box is the place were the cord normally is to go: this middle part is here also divided, together with the two side compartments. First I thought this could be a box for spare bulbs only, but then the inserts would not be there or should also be there for the middle row.
Various 34
Box: 23 x 30cm.
Old box with 16 cone shaped light bulbs with an exhaust tip on top; cloth covered cord with green porcelain sockets with a metal clip attached
Bulbs copper and aluminium bases and some appear to be unmarked and some are marked:
- WARTBURG 14V
- Stamped “14V”
- Stamped “?.N.A.F. 14V”.
On the lid is stamped “No. 186” and “220V/240V”, which is repeated on the inside of the box.
I have been told it is English. In a book there is a box with similar graphics and also pine cone lamps, but the interior differently organized and more lamps, said to be Japanese, and attributed to ca 1920.

Various 35
Box 29 x 21cm. Lid fixed to the box.
Old box with similar graphics as boxes 25, 26 and 33. Green cloth covered cord with 16 dark green bakelite sockets. The cord and the bulbs with aluminum base are in my opinion original, the ones with copper base I think are replacements. The aluminum bases are marked 15V Japan, while the copper ones are marked 15V. The yellow switch and the dark brown plug came with the box.
No markings or information, besides a red/white export label on one side of the box with the still to be translated "J.B.R.C.":

Various 36
Box 22 x 14,5 cm. Lid separate.
Although with similar graphics as the previous box, I feel it is not as old. Green plastic cord with 10 plastic bell covers. There were a variation of bulbs in the box, i.e. Sigtay, 15V Japan, 15V, Splendor, but we think that there should be clear glass, round bulbs in it, and that the box dates from the 1950s-60s. The storing of the set is a mystery: stored this way, with the cord underneath the insert, the sides of the insert do not touch the bottom of the box and the two flaps do not seem to have any purpose. I have tried storing them with the bells on top, but then with the cord it is a mess and one flap for the plug, but why two?
Besides the export label on the side and the shop’s gold label on the lid, there are no markings.

Various 37
Box 25 x 9cm.
STAR LAMPS
Old box, no similar graphics in this collection. Green plastic cord with 8 green Bakelite sockets. There is room for 9 bulbs, so one reserve.
The bulbs are the small size, each marked 15V JAPAN, and all clear glass. Of course it is not certain they originally came with the box, but some of them do match the design on the lid.
On the side of the box is “Decoration Lamp Set” and on one short side in a white panel stamped in blue ink: “S-F-110 1?360” (small-fancy ?). Inside the lid the standard stamped text “Avant d’allumer, visser….. Alvorens aan te steken, …”.
On the base there is a red/white export label.

Various 38
Box 15,5 x 14,5cm. Lid fixed to the box.
ELECTRICAL DECORATION SET
Old box with unusual, but nice graphics. The Santa has Asian traits, and because of the text “FOREIGN”, it would be Japanese.
The box was empty, and the inside is not complete. But from the one complete row we can deduct that it were indeed cone shaped bulbs, in compliance with the text on the lid “OLIVE CONE SET”, and  not figurals as depicted on the tree.
Besides the text “Electrical Decoration Set” on each side of the lid, no other markings or labels.

Various 39
Box 31,5 x 34cm. Lid separate.
POPE het nieuwe garnituur voor uw Kerstboomverlichting (the new garniture for your Christmas Tree illumination). Green plastic cord with 16 candle shaped light bulbs on a turnable clip. Bulbs marked “PHILIPS 14V3W HOLLAND”.
The light bulb factory Goossens, Pope & Co.  was established in 1889 in Venlo, Netherlands. The driving force behind the company was the English engineer Frederic Pope. In 1920 Philips acquired a majority of the shares of Pope, but still light bulbs continue to be made under that name for a long time.
The above explains why the bulbs in this box are marked “PHILIPS”.

Various 40
Box: 35,5 x 9cm.
Eight light bulbs, same model but different colors, engraved 16V with a green (now nearly completely faded) cloth covered cord with brownish bakelite sockets. There is room for a reserve light bulb.
No markings on the box; if there were any, they were probably on the lid, but that is missing.

Box: 41,5 x 26,5cm.
"AMPOULES POUR ABRE DE NOËL" "CONTACT PERMANENT" "DECORATION".
Normally I think there are 16 cavities for 16 lamps; the present lamps and cloth covered cord with bakelite sockets with metal clips is possibly an addition, although on the side of the box the label says "GIFU LANTERNS 220-240 W." and someone has added "14Volt", while on the front someone has noted "9L 15V". Maybe only replacement bulbs.
On the base of the box an inspection label with oval blue stamp, reading
"The Japan Federation of Electric Lamp Mfrs. Ass. *Inspection Bureau*" "PASSED", and a small round blue stamp, without text as far as I can see, in a corner.

Box: 26 x 16cm.
Nine figural lights, clear glass, engraved <M> 14VJAPAN, with a green braided cloth covered cord with nine green sockets; I do not know from what material the sockets are made of. The red Bakelite plug is unusual.
There are no labels or other references on the box. Details, such as the eyes of the frog and the fish, the girl's flower and the cat's medal are highlighted in gold or silver.
The M-mark in a diamond:

Box: 18 x 7cm.
Nine bulbs, not coming with the box; box is interesting because of the Export Standard label with its clear circular stamp, with the date and the marking, not complete yet "..E.L.R.C..
".

"HOLLY" CHRISTMAS LIGHT SET: 18 figural lights, most of them lanterns and came with the box: 14pc marked "PC15VJAPAN"; 2 marked "15VJAPAN"; 1 unmarked; the berry and the snow-capped lantern are original and also marked "PC15VJAPAN". The cord has 16 holders, dark green bakelite.
Inside the lid the text "Avant d'allumer .....Alvorens aan te steken ...".

On the side of the lid a white label with :
; Mark on the bulb:

Box: 19,5 x 35,7lcm
“Electrical Decoration Set” is foreseen for sixteen bulbs plus 2 spare, as mentioned on the label on the side of the box. The wire is a replacement, while the metal clips are original. The 10 Japanese bulbs came with the box, models shown on the cover. All have aluminium base and are marked “16V FOREIGN”, but one is clear glass, while the others are milk glass. I have been told that over the years the defective bulbs were replaced by new ones as long as they were available.
The box is marked “FOREIGN”, meaning it was for export to England, and a triangle logo with “DIAMOND” underneath. This logo is repeated on the white label on the side of the box, reading "ASSORTED LANTERN SET 16 LAMPS AND 2 SPARES WITH CLIP PARMANENT CONTACT FOREIGN" (misspelling of "parmanent" is as on the label). Inside the lid is again a while label, "PERMANENT CONTACT SET Should a lamp fail it should be replaced immediately to prevent other lamps becoming overloaded."
On the base is part of a blue stamp, usually having the date, but now disappeared.

Besides the design on the cover, the box is covered with the well know holly design.

This box comes from the Estate of Harold and Beatrice Bird, United Kingdom.
